Placenta Encapsulation
The placenta has a long history in Chinese pharmacopoeia. Traditionally it has been used for many ailments including: infertility, impotence, low back pain, tinnitus, insufficient lactation, and chronic cough/wheezing. Today it is primarily processed for the mother to take after childbirth. It can be a huge asset for her recovery and I’ve found this service to be an invaluable gift one can offer. It can help stabilize hormones during the postpartum period, decrease the risk for postpartum depression, support lactation, enhance the body's natural ability to manage pain, replenish B vitamins, help with energy levels, and support the immune system.

Placenta encapsulation is a process of taking the placenta and first steaming it. I usually steam it with an herbal blend of ginger, astragalus, and dang gui. Ginger will help the body’s digestive system process and absorb the nutrients. Astragalus is one of the main herbs in Chinese medicine to strengthen a person's Qi/active metabolic function. Dang gui is used to support, invigorate, and rebuild blood which in childbirth we often see such depletion especially with the after effects of postpartum hemorrhage. It is then dehydrated overnight and pulsed into a fine powder. It is lastly put into veggie or gelatin capsules.
This process allows the Mother to receive the medicinal properties of the placenta in an easy, vitamin-like form. It can be taken with other vitamins and supplements or on its own. A typical dose is two capsules a day but that can be individually set based on what the mother needs.
I also offer tinctures, a liquid alcohol based extraction of the placenta. Tinctures have a long shelf life so it is something to keep with you as you start menstruating again and can even be taken into menopause.
I take care of everything from picking up the placenta wherever you decide to deliver, processing it, and dropping off the capsules at your home (within a 20 mile radius of downtown Flagstaff). The process usually takes 3 days. If you are interested and would like to lean more about placenta encapsulation and how it might benefit you during your transition into motherhood please call or email me to set up a prenatal visit/consultation today.
