Acupuncture - Frequently Asked Questions

What can Acupuncture & East Asian Medicine treat?

Because East Asian Medicine is a complete medical system there's not much that can't be greatly improved with treatment. The World Health Organization states "acupuncture has been proved-through controlled trials to be an effective treatment for the following diseases, symptoms or conditions". The following list is only a brief example of commonly treated conditions and is by no means limiting. If you have any specific questions regarding you personal health presentation, feel free to contact us for a complimentary consultation in person or over the phone.

What if I already have a primary care physician?

Acupuncture is complimentary with other systems of health care. We will be happy to work in conjunction with you and other health care practitioners. Please inform your acupuncturist of any other health systems and/or medications which you are currently using. It is helpful to bring a list of medications and any medical records to the clinic so we can gain an accurate picture of your condition.

Is Acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture needles are considerably thinner than a hypodermic needle (getting a shot), which is what most of us associate needles with in the West. They are as thin as a strand of hair. Treatments are very relaxing and therapeutic, often times patients are so relaxed they fall asleep during treatment.

How can Acupuncture be used in preventative care?

Traditional Chinese acupuncture recognizes that many times aches, pains, and other discomforts are only symptoms of a deeper, underlying issue. Therefore, a comprehensive diagnosis is compiled which takes into account the individual's body, mind, and emotions rather than simply categorizing them into a one- sided symptom diagnosis. The basis of acupuncture is to build the body's own immune system so that disease will not develop. Prevention is the best medicine.

How many treatments will I need?

Each individual is different.  Long term chronic conditions will take longer to resolve.  Acute issues, such as catching a cold, can resolve very quickly. Like all medicine, a course of treatment is dependent on your individual presentation.  The more frequent treatments you recieve, the better the outcome is.  Acupuncture works on a cumulative basis especially in the beginning of a course of treatment. Feel free to contact me for a 15 minute free consultation to get a better idea of what your treatment plan may look like.
